About Bright-Eyed and Bushy-Tailed Health
I am Nicole, the owner of Bright-Eyed and Bushy-Tailed Health. I am a Certified Health Coach and I always practice what I preach. I struggled with several health conditions for most of my life, but I am a living testimony to the power our bodies have to heal when we support them and give them the right conditions!
Most notably, I had debilitating headaches from the age of 8. I also had stomachaches as a child. All of this led to numerous invasive (and often painful and traumatizing) medical tests as a child. The answer to everything I was experiencing was a drug of some sort or another, and then I was reeling from the side effects of the drugs! In my undergraduate years, my headaches were so debilitating that I had to drop classes and I was in the emergency room 14 times in one year!
The biggest turning point for me came when, at 19, they continued to look for the cause of my headaches and found a tumor behind my eye. I was TERRIFIED. They wanted to rush me into surgery, but thankfully my mom urged caution and we pumped the brakes. We sought a second opinion from a doctor who mercifully advised a wait-and-see approach and which gave me time to explore other options. I began my healing journey by starting to treat myself holistically and without drugs.
However, even though I was making efforts to be healthy, I began to have back pain, joint pain, and many other indicators of widespread inflammation and toxicity. My hormones were way out of whack, and I was EXHAUSTED! I was told surgery was the answer to my back pain and I had tests for arthritis because of my joint pain – all while in my 20s! I felt completely drained after eating meals, especially breakfast on the weekends and I wanted to stay in my pajamas and sleep all day long. I dragged through my work days and always longed for a nap after lunch. Sugar was my pick-me-up and I could eat a whole pint of ice cream easily in one sitting. I CRAVED sugar and I was clearly addicted to it!
I wanted to be healthier and I was making a very conscious effort to do so. I still thought I was eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. But I was also very confused - there was SO much contradictory information out there, especially about nutrition. Who could I believe?
While I made occasional baby steps, I was frustrated that, despite making a great effort towards my health, I was not noticeably healthier and I still had many nagging afflictions. The same was true of my family. In the back of my mind, I thought perhaps we just had to resign ourselves to managing our infirmities the best we could instead of overcoming them. However, I held fast to the conviction that I was not just a victim of bad health and I never lost hope that I had the power to be healthier through my own choices.
I therefore continued my search for answers to my own health conditions as well as those afflicting my friends and family for decades. I am a trained researcher and analyst by profession with a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Pepperdine University and I also have an educational and professional background in instruction. I consistently applied my skills to finding answers to improve my health and that of my family. I nearly found the end of the internet on several occasions, but I wasn’t giving up!
The biggest change came after overhauling my diet. I did not “go on a diet,” but I changed what my family and I ate significantly, even though I thought I was already “eating healthy” and “being healthy.” Through much trial and error in the subsequent years, I learned new ways of thinking, eating, and cooking. I am now a proudly reformed sugar addict! I have found healthy ways to indulge my sweet tooth that don't leave me feeling deprived, but I also don't crave it anymore because my body chemistry has improved. Because I have gone through the changes, I know what it takes and I can help you and your family with simple, achievable steps. I can assist you with everything that is keeping you from your best health - whether it is grocery shopping and decoding confusing and intentionally misleading food labels, finding the time to eat healthily, how to eat healthily AND affordably, how to stay motivated, how to eat healthily while traveling, how to manage cravings, how to detoxify your beauty routine and home environment, and more. I have been through the (sometimes painful and difficult) learning curve, so you don't have to go through everything I did.
Given the results I have achieved, I have no desire to go back to my previous way of eating. My headaches are minimal, and my back pain and joint pain are virtually non-existent. I have vastly more energy (despite now being a mother to two young boys), a noticeably better mood (and that's saying something!), and I look better physically. I have been told my skin glows. After both of my pregnancies I have worn my pre-pregnancy clothes within weeks and lost the “baby weight” easily without dieting, deprivation, or slaving away at the gym. After both deliveries I was told repeatedly that I did not look like I had just had a baby. I also helped my family cure many of their ailments. Not only have I reaped the physical rewards, but I truly enjoy the food I eat to such a degree that junk food truly no longer holds any allure for me so it is not even a struggle to turn it down. I walk past the office donuts with ease! I want to shout out my good health from the rooftops!
I am also committed to not letting my children go through what I went through with my health and giving them the best possible healthy start in life. Because of the results I have achieved, I am truly passionate about helping others achieve the same positive outcomes. I know it can be done, and I want to help you get there!
More about me personally: I live on our “homestead” in the country, complete with chickens, beehives, an orchard, a garden, and dogs and a cat. I most enjoy spending time with my husband and two young boys, and in my free time I research and voraciously read health-related materials, experiment with new recipes or creating my own concoctions, and work towards improving the health and lives of my family and friends.
